Baby #4's first ultra sound. I go into the fertility clinic and they get down to business. The put me right into the u/s room and tell me to get undressed from the waist down and they give me a sheet to cover myself with. A woman doc. (resident) comes in and we go over some basic info. I tell her about my odd numbers and how about 2 weeks ago they seemed to stall out. She proceeds to tell me that not everyone follows that 48 hour doubling thing. Then she says, well sometimes if a pregnancy starts out at twins....then she sort of stops to size me up. I jump in and say, yes if one doesn't make it, it would get the numbers all funky. She looked relieved to see I wouldn't fall apart on her.
On to the u/s. She does the whole dildo shaped u/s wand up my foo foo. I can't see the screen and she tells me she is going to check things out and then she'll turn the screen. She finally turns it and I see a well formed sac with the yolk sac inside. She asks how far along I think I am. I tell her that according to my LMP I am 6 weeks 2 days...but I didn't O on CD 14, so I think I am really closer to 6 weeks flat, or the tail end of 5 weeks. She shows me a shadowy thing that she says she thinks is the fetal pole - but because (and I quote) of the "cheap machine in this room" she couldn't zoom in enough to tell for sure. So come back next week and we'll do another u/s.
Now onto the shock. She tells me she now knows why my numbers got all funky for a few days. There are 2 empty, and much smaller sacs in my uterus! Yikes, apparently baby #4 started out as baby #4, #5, & #6! There is no way the other 2 were viable. The sacs were only about 1/3 the size of the well formed one, and they were completely empty - no hint of a yolk sac.
So there you have it folks.
