It looks like this Gestational Diabetes thing is going to be a bit harder than I thought. I went to the big GD class at the Navy Hospital yesterday. Got my blood sugar meter, and my "meal planning" packet. I guess the are being more PC about the whole thing and don't call it a "diet" anymore. Like that changes what it is. Anyway, it is actually not bad. I mean today for breakfast I was allowed 2 slices whole wheat toast (with 1 tbsp margarine), 1 scrambled egg, and a "free" beverage. But I digress.
So, yesterday at the class the nurse has all of us preggo GD ladies sitting in a circle getting to know our sugar meters and has us test our blood. I have to say mine was a wonderful 87 - after having had a less than GD breakfast 3 hours before. Yay! I am supposed to test my sugar level in the moring before eating/drinking anything...2 hours after breakfast, 2 hours after lunch, and 2 hours after dinner. Anyway, back to yesterday. I had dinner at home and then 2 hours later my blood sugar level (BSL) was 119. Not too bad. They want your 2 hour post meal BSL to be less than 120. I checked my BSL again before bed and it was 100. So, I retire to bed thinking this won't be as bad as I had imagined, and maybe my GD isn't too bad afterall.
Then comes the morning. I get up and get my testing kit. Wash and dry my hands. Calibrate the meter. Stick my finger and wait. 118. 118???!!!! How can that be???? Ugh - too high. The powers that be want fasting BSL to be 95 or less. Oh poo! Hubby asks what happens now. I begrudgingly tell him if I can't get those fasting numbers down I will be most likely getting insulin shots. Part of this is calling my OB after I have been on the GD diet for a week and telling him how my numbers are. Ick! I am hoping it is like the nurse said, and that it can take a few days for your body to respond to the dietary changes. all!
On another topic, I can not believe I am almost into my third trimester! Time sure flies. I know I probably write that in just about every entry. But it amazes me. I have 95 days to go before I meet this baby. Give or take. On a good note though...with me having GD there is no way the OB is going to let me go 2 weeks over due. Yes, the military has a policy that unless there is a medical necessity - they won't induce labor until you are 2 weeks overdue. However, with this new GD thing...they won't let me go that long. So, it looks like our sweet little tax deduction, opps, I mean baby, will be here before the new year after all.
